CONTEXT

Peacebuilding as a Global Industry and the Challenges of Education Within It

Peacebuilding is today a multi-billion euro industry, with global infrastructure that reflects an acute need for conflict resolution and security, and there is growing confidence that this is possible, especially with new technologies. The growth of peacebuilding is driving a better understanding of current educational offerings and training, but practitioners still need to apply these skills.

However, much of the current offering remains fragmented, disconnected from other relevant learning opportunities. Collaboration between peacebuilding providers is hindered by different pedagogical perspectives, basic ethos, and methodological approaches to teaching.

There is no clear guidance for learners on the skills and competencies they should develop, nor a straightforward way to strategically combine courses. There is also a lack of systematic reflection on the advantages and limitations of online and distance learning in peacebuilding education, as many providers use these tools extensively.

OUR MISSION

BuildPeace will strengthen the skills of Europeans for peacebuilding and community connection

The project will improve the offering of teaching, learning, and training in the peacebuilding industry by bringing together providers from the sectors of formal education (FE) and non-formal education (NFE) into a shared practice.

Three Main Project Goals

Shared Competency Framework

Creating a shared framework of key competencies in both formal (FE) and non-formal (NFE) education.

Flexible Learning Pathways

Helping learners navigate and find flexible pathways to relevant learning opportunities.

Connecting FE and NFE Through Technology

Connecting access to formal and non-formal education into a unified offering, using technology.

TESTING IN PRACTICE

Two BuildPeace Workshops for Piloting and Improving the Approach

To test the tools and resources, learners will participate in two BuildPeace workshops. These workshops will pilot and improve the BuildPeace approach. Participants will be provided with educational content, delivery methods, and tools that the project is experimenting with.
